Salary range: The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Research Series Fiscal Year. A reasonable estimate for this position is $90,200.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

The Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position Seismology Assistant Researcher. Under the direction of Distinguished Professor Emily Brodsky, the Seismology Assistant Researcher will conceptualize, design, develop, perform and analyze experiments on analog materials that probe the fundamentals of friction and failure.

Duties will include performing analog experiments to investigate earthquake rupture and isolate the role of stress heterogeneity that is applicable to geohazards, and determining scale-dependent shear strength in the earth's crust. The candidate will be expected to write publications and grant proposals based on their research findings.

Applicants with expertise in earthquake physics, fracture mechanics, soft matter physics, and extensive experience (five years or more) with building and performing laboratory experiments for mechanical studies are highly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in geophysics or a related field.
  • A minimum of four years' postdoctoral experience in geophysics or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in analog earthquake experiments.
