Salary range: The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year. A reasonable estimate for this position is $110,300 - $137,400.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: July 1, 2025
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

Professor Carrie Partch in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Cell Biologist. The successful candidate will support work with a team in the Partch lab to investigate small molecule regulators of the mammalian circadian clock.

The duties of the job are to 1) maintain cultured human and mouse cell lines; 2) design and implement protocols for robotic liquid handling equipment in conjunction with circadian synchronization experiments; 3) implement procedures for the optimization of fluorescent and/or luminescent reporters; 4) work with the team at the UCSC Chemical Screening Center to apply computational algorithms such as hierarchical clustering to the analysis of microscopy images. Possible related areas of research may include follow-up studies on specific compounds using traditional cell biology and biochemical techniques like luciferase reporter assays, co-immunoprecipitations, and western blotting.

Applicants with any of the following areas of experience are strongly encouraged to apply: experience with laboratory automation and robotics; experience maintaining mammalian cell cultures and associated proficiency with sterile technique; experience with various biochemical techniques such as gel electrophoresis, cloning and expression of proteins; and/or experience with techniques associated with fluorescence microscopy.

Individuals who are appointed as Specialists at the full rank are normally expected to have a significant record of academic accomplishments, including contributions to published or in-press research in the field, professional recognition in the field, and a demonstrated record of University and/or public service. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)
  • Ph.D. or a baccalaureate degree and ten or more years of post-baccalaureate research experience. Degree must be in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, or a related field. Equivalent foreign degrees will be considered.
  • A minimum of seven years’ research experience in a lab.
