Position description
The Mathematics Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for one or more Math Fellows in all areas of mathematics, including algebra, number theory, topology, analysis, and geometry and dynamics. Applicants with expertise in the broad area of geometry/topology are strongly encouraged to apply.
Under the direction of the UCSC Mathematics Department Chair, the math fellow(s) will contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction and the research activity of the department and will be expected to participate in department seminars. Additionally, the math fellows must be able to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from a breadth of academic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Each math fellow will be matched with a mentor from our permanent faculty for career and research guidance.
Experience teaching mathematics at the college or university level as the instructor of record will be highly valued. Preference will be given to candidates whose field of research complements the department’s existing research activities.

Qualifications
- PhD (or equivalent foreign degree) in mathematics or closely related field such as topology and foundations or applied mathematics. It is expected the degree will be completed by August 31, 2026.
- A minimum of one year (3 quarters/2 semesters) teaching experience in college-level mathematics.
- Evidence of research accomplishments (e.g., publications; grants; fellowships; giving conference talks; invited seminar talks; organizing workshops; and participation in research conferences, workshops, and/or summer schools), which can be obtained before or after the award of the doctorate degree.

Cover Letter (Preliminary Screening Document) - Briefly summarize your interest in the position, as well as your qualifications in teaching/mentorship, scholarship/creative activity, and any other relevant personal/professional experience and/or contributions to the success of all students. Include a list of possible mentors from the department faculty. Up to 2 pages.
Statement of Research (Preliminary Screening Document) - Statement that describes your most important achievements, your goals and vision for research, and the experience and qualifications that make you well-suited to achieve them. Up to 7 pages.

Outreach and Engagement Statement - Statement that describes your contributions in supporting the mathematical community when engaging in mathematical outreach activities (for example: math camps, math circles, professional development, etc.), campus /community service, advocating for institutional reforms, and promoting practices in departmental spaces, institutional settings, and professional associations to ensure they are inclusive to all.
The Search Committee will refer to this rubric when evaluating the applicants’ outreach and engagement statement.Statement of Teaching - Statement that describes your formal teaching contributions (this can include classroom experience and other relevant supervision/mentorship/instruction), future teaching and mentoring goals, and your teaching approach and practices. Please also describe, as applicable, your experience implementing pedagogical strategies tailored to varied learning styles, innovating upon assessment practices, and/or efforts to create welcoming and supportive classroom environments for all students. Up to 2 pages.

Applications must include confidential letters of recommendation*. Note that your references, or dossier service, will submit their confidential letters directly to the UC Recruit System.
At least one letter must address the applicant's teaching experience and ability and two letters must address the applicant's research.
