Position description
The Division of Global Engagement at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for Instructors of English for Academic Purposes. Under the direction of Richard Hughey, Ph.D., Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education and Global Engagement, the instructor will teach via in-person, three sections of one of the following three courses:
(1) Academic Writing
(2) Oral Communication
(3) Reading & Research Skills
The ability to commit to the high-paced and intensive nature of an academic preparation course is essential. The position will include the following duties:
- Plan daily lessons and teach 3 to 4.5 hours each day or equivalent (total of 55-60 classroom hours).
- Attend weekly staff meetings and attend pre-course planning and orientation meetings.
- Assess student work consistently with agreed criteria.
- Organize and provide individual feedback to students on their individual work and group presentations.
- Maintain up-to-date records of work and attendance.
- Fulfill all other course-related duties as required.
Students are graduate-level from a variety of international backgrounds and academic disciplines and will have English proficiency of a minimum 83 iBT or 7.0 IELTS. Many will have immediate assignments as teaching assistants with their respective academic departments or programs. Class sizes are expected to be between 15 and 25 students. See course details.

- August 17, 2026: Orientation (morning welcome)
- August 18 to September 10, 2026: Teaching
- September 11, 2026: Grading and assessment reports

Qualifications
M.A./M.S.; or alternatively a B.A./B.S. combined with a post-graduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and a minimum of one year of teaching at the university/college level. Applicable degree fields are applied linguistics or a TESOL-related field. Equivalent foreign degrees will be considered.
