Position description

The University of California invites applications for a position in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Kiehl. The candidate will help with on-going research in the study of warm climates of Earth’s deep past, supported by a grant from the Heising-Simons Foundation, and will perform innovative research using the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Community Earth System Model (CESM). The focus of the research is to help develop a deep time paleoclimate version of the CESM and apply it to studying climate feedback processes that potentially operated during past warm periods including: the early Eocene, mid-Cretaceous and end Permian. The project will in particular focus on the role of cloud-aerosol interactions for these deep time periods. The candidate will perform advanced statistical data analysis, interpret and disseminate scientific findings in the form of written manuscripts and oral presentations. Responsibilities also include contributions to research project goals, serving as primary and co-author on peer reviewed manuscripts and helping to write project reports.

RANK: Assistant Project Scientist – Project Scientist, determined by experience.

SALARY: Minimum $54,800, commensurate with experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Atmospheric Sciences, Atmospheric Chemistry, Paleoclimatology, Earth Sciences, or other relevant field; and at least two years post-baccalaureate experience using large-scale global climate models.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Familiarity with the NCAR CESM and with climate model simulation. Familiarity with the modeling of atmospheric chemical processes.

POSITION AVAILABLE: As soon as possible (negotiable).

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Initial appointment is for 1 year. Should hiring unit propose reappointment, a review to assess performance will be conducted.
